The Russian Embassy in South Africa held a commemorative event dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War

On 14 September 2021, the Embassy of Russia in South Africa held a commemorative function dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War.

On 22 June 1941, Nazi Germany perfidiously attacked the Soviet Union. Thus the Great Patriotic War began which lasted 1418 days and claimed lives of 27 million Soviet citizens.

The Brest Fortress in Belorussia took the brunt of Nazi invaders. Built in 1836-1842, this old citadel by June 1941 was of little military significance. It were Soviet soldiers’ courage and devotion to duty that stood in the Wehrmacht’s way to Moscow: Hitlerites expected to capture the fortress in 8 hours, yet its defenders fought back for a whole month.

Participants of the event including the representatives of the diplomatic corps, business community and mass media were welcomed by Ambassador of Russia to South Africa H.E. Mr. Ilya Rogachev. Addressing the guests, the head of the Russian Embassy stressed: “The heroic deed of the Brest Fortress’ defenders must not be forgotten. The story of the Fortress’ defence is a story of unbreakable will, self-sacrifice and choice. The defenders of Brest chose death instead of shame, chose courage instead of despair and chose the lives of others instead of their own lives. The heroes are alive as long as we remember them. So tonight we would like to share our memories with you.”

Participants of the event were introduced to a special photo exhibition entitled “The Symbols of Victory” dedicated to Soviet wartime orders and medals as well as Red Army warriors honoured with those decorations.

The central event of the function was the screening of the Russia-Belarus movie “The Fortress of War,” telling of Soviet soldiers’ selfless struggle against Nazis during the first days of the war.

The Embassy of Russia in South Africa expresses its appreciation to the copyright owner – studio ‘VoenFilm’ and personally the movie’s general producer Igor Ugolnikov for the assistance in organizing the function.
