In total, some 270 Russian volunteers fought for the Boers in 1899-1902. The best known among them is captain Leo Pokrowsky who had been placed in charge of a partisan unit. The “Russian captain” as he was called by the Boers, died heroically at the hands of a British sniper in Utrecht’s outskirts on 25 December 1900.
