On the Opening of the Exhibition of the 6th Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest Winning Entries

Russia’s Ambassador to South Africa H.E. Mr.Ilya Rogachev opened the exhibition of the 2020 Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest winning entries. The exhibition is organized in Pretoria by the Embassy of Russia in RSA in cooperation with “Sputnik” International News Agency.
Over 40 photographic works by young photojournalists from Russia, South Africa, Spain, India, Bangladesh, Austria, Hungary etc. were showcased at the exhibition – those who, according to the jury of the contest, would determine trends in photojournalism in XXI century.
In his address to the participants of the opening ceremony, the Ambassador extended gratitude to the hosts of the exhibition and recalled the background of the establishment of the contest which bears the name of Russian photojournalist Andrei Stenin who died in the line of duty in the south-eastern Ukraine in August 2014. On 22 December 2020, Andrei would have turned 40.
“We regard the Stenin Contest as a prominent platform for young photographers to showcase their skill and talent. In a sense, photographs are mirrors where we can see how versatile our world truly is and Stenin Contest turns the mirrors into a kaleidoscope,” the Ambassador said.
This year, the Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest was held for the 6th time. Over 5000 entries from 75 countries, including South Africa, were submitted.
South African photographers are among the most active participants of the contest. In 2017 P.Jikelo claimed 1st place in Top News nomination, in 2018 Justin Sullivan won South Africa another “gold medal” in the very same category and took 2nd place in My Planet nomination. Finally, in 2020 the photo series “Ebola: Democratic Republic of the Congo” by J.Wessels were awarded the ICRC’s special prize for humanitarian photography in the Top News category.
