Press Release on the Working Visit of the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation to the Republic of South Africa

On 25 November, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation visited the Republic of South Africa.

In Pretoria N.Patrushev was received by President of the Republic of South Africa Jacob Zuma. During the meeting issues pertaining to Russia-South Africa cooperation in various spheres were discussed.

N.Patrushev also held consultations with Minister of State Security of the Republic of South Africa David Mahlobo. The Sides discussed Russian and South African joint efforts in countering international terrorism and extremism, ensuring information security as well as matters of cooperation within BRICS and the UN, Russia-South Africa military and law enforcement departments’ coordination.

The Sides took note of successful Russia-South Africa interaction on the international arena and the proximity of approaches of the two States toward key items of global and regional agenda.

Russia-South Africa cooperation on legal matters, in military and military-technical spheres, promising nuclear energy projects were also a subject of discussion.

The Sides paid special attention to countering «coloured revolutions» and preventing interference in internal affairs of African states.

The Sides noted the importance of intensifying dialogue and strengthening partnership between Russia and South Africa on security matters that are in line with long-term interests of both countries and contribute to maintaining security and stability.

Representatives of Russian Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Justice, Defence, Telecom and Mass Communications, Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation, Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation and State Corporation «Rosatom» took part in the consultations.

Following up the negotiations N.Patrushev and D.Mahlobo signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Office of the Security Council of the Russian Federation and the Department of State Security of the Republic of South Africa. This document establishes a framework for regular consultations and exchange of opinions on matters of mutual interest as regards national, regional and international security.

N.Patrushev and D.Mahlobo have met for the fourth time this year. The previous meetings were held in Moscow during bilateral Russia-South Africa consultations on security issues and the BRICS National Security Advisors Meeting as well as in Ulan-Ude at the international Meeting of High Representatives Supervising Security Matters.
