Bears and vodka: stereotypes about Russia exposed at a Russian Movie Night event
The Russian Embassy hosted yet another movie screening event during which it addressed several popular myths about Russia.
There are plenty of stereotypes, including in Africa, about bears roaming the streets in Russia, and most of these stories are just that – myths. However, there are extraordinary stories of families in Russia who have welcomed a bear into their lives as a pet. One of such stories – about the bear named Mansour from Russia’s Tver region – made into the documentary ‘A Bear’s Tale’ was introduced to the guests of the event.
The function continued with the 1998 comedy ‘Peculiarities of the National Fishing’ by Alexander Rogozhkin.
‘The film has become folklore of its time, satirizing enduring Russian stereotypes like vodka, pelmeni (dumplings) and the bad condition of national roads, – Ambassador Ilya Rogachev noted, - Through satire and wit, it explores both the strengths and weaknesses of the Russian spirit.’
The Russian Embassy in South Africa extends gratitude to RT channel and CTB Film Company for their assistance in organizing the movie night.
