On Minister Sisulu’s Working Visit to the Russian Federation

On 21-22 November 2018 Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa Ms Lindiwe Sisulu paid a two-day working visit to the Russian Federation, met Russia’s Foreign Minister Mr Sergey Lavrov and co-chaired the 15th Session of the Russia – South Africa Intergovernmental Committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation.

During the ministerial meeting, Mr Lavrov and Ms Sisulu discussed a number of topical international issues within the context of South Africa’s third tenure as a non-permanent member of the UNSC (2019 – 2020) and the upcoming G20 Buenos Aires Summit. Also, the parties touched upon the prospects of Russian – South African bilateral relations with the focus on trade and investment opportunities, and also technical cooperation. The Ministers confirmed their commitment to join efforts to fight global terrorism and contribute to sustainable development and political stability of African countries.

On the second day of her trip Minister Sisulu visited Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) – one of the most prestigious universities in Russia, alma-mater of the majority of Russian diplomats and the only university in the world that teaches as many as 53 foreign languages. The visit started with a discussion between Ms Sisulu and the University board which focused on core activities of the BRICS Network University and cooperation prospects in the educational sphere. Afterwards Ms Sisulu addressed MGIMO students, emphasizing South Africa’s role in maintaining peace and stability on the African continent.  Despite her busy schedule, Minister Sisulu managed to devote some time to an informal interaction with the members of MGIMO African Club – a community of Russian students with keen interest in African history, politics and culture.
