A literary work on South Africa’s independence struggle introduced in RSA

On 10 December Russia’s Ambassador to South Africa H.E.Mr.I.Rogachev took part in the Launch Colloquium where a nine-volume work of general Hashim Mbitha on South Africa’s liberation struggle was presented, which had been released in Tanzania a few years ago.

Brigadier general H.Mbitha was the Executive Secretary of the Liberation Committee of the Organization of African Unity from 1972 to 1994, and an active participant of South Africa’s liberation struggle.

His work, previously unavailable for general audience, includes documentary evidence of the struggle of South African countries against colonial rule and inter alia covers Russia’s support for liberation movements. The Launch Colloquium was opened by Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture H.E.Mr.E.N.Mthethwa in presence of struggle veterans.

Honouring the memory of Africa’s freedom fighters, Ambassador I.Rogachev noted that the Soviet Union and Russia contributed significantly to achieving the independence by South African countries and their development as sovereign democratic states. Reminder of that is the Russian section of “the Wall of Names” in “Freedom Park” memorial complex.

The event has received wide coverage in local media.
